The
inspiring story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull is about a courageous
little bird who woke up one day and realized that ...
"hey
there must be more to life then to be like everybody else - just eating,
pooping, working, building someone else’s dream, sleeping and dying?"
So
he decided to make his life count for something despite the great abuse and
ridicule he endured from his elders, family and friends, who wanted him to stay
the same, to just conform and not rock the boat and create disharmony and chaos
in the community.
But
despite his great fear of the unknown, Jonathan persisted with his dream to fly
higher and faster to do something inspirational with his life. It wasn’t easy
because there was no one to teach him how to achieve his dream.
He
was totally on his own. But one day he flew so fast and so high that he reached
his dream of being a super fast flier, and he turned into an immortal, and the
rest was history.
Through
his self-belief, courage, boldness and vision he changed the rules of life
forever, and in the process he inspired all the young seagulls, who idolized him
for showing them the way to enlightenment, true power and self-determination to
decide their own destinies no matter what.
For
showing them that there was more to life then tradition, custom, helplessness,
fear, mediocrity, boredom, misery, lack of freedom, emotional self-imprisonment,
scarcity, humiliation, bills, and more bills, and massive limitations.
That
there are great rewards to be gained in life by thinking and doing different
very simple, very valuable things each day. That life can be joyous,
challenging, exciting and limitless - if you ardently believe in yourself.
That
life can be fun, happy, joyous and totally magical and totally awesome and
totally limitless for you ...

"Most gulls don't bother to learn more than the simplest facts of
flight--how to get from shore to food and back again," writes
author Richard Bach in this allegory about a unique bird named
Jonathan Livingston Seagull. "For most gulls it is not flying
that matters, but eating. For this gull, though, it was not eating
that mattered, but flight." Flight is indeed the metaphor that
makes the story soar. Ultimately
this is a fable about the importance of seeking a higher purpose in
life, even if your flock, tribe, or neighborhood finds your ambition
threatening. (At one point our beloved gull is even
banished from his flock.) By not compromising his higher vision,
Jonathan gets the ultimate payoff: transcendence. Ultimately, he
learns the meaning of love and kindness. The dreamy seagull
photographs by Russell Munson provide just the right
illustrations--although the overall packaging does seem a bit dated
(keep in mind that it was first published in 1970). Nonetheless, this
is a spirituality classic, and an especially engaging parable for
adolescents. --Gail Hudson --

Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a bird who teaches us how to follow our
dreams and reach our goals, no matter what anyone else might think.
Jonathan is a seagull who wants to master the art of flying, even though
his flock has told him many times that all seagulls should concentrate
on is getting food. Jonathan has tried to be a "good gull,"
but he cannot quell his urge to fly. Richard Bach reads this fable in a
calm voice that sounds like a blowing wind. When there's fighting among
the gulls, the tone of his voice reflects that anger. Jonathan's tale
moves us as much as Richard Bach's voice does. J.F.M. © AudioFile 2004,
