There is one fault in we human beings that is so powerful that it compels us to fuck up and destroy everything that we touch.

And fuck up is putting it mildly.

There is no other more appropriate word that precisely describes the crimes we human beings have done and continue to commit to our environment and against each other.

Just look at the state of all our natural assets, our rivers, forests, land, oceans, ozone, and even our once pristine polar regions are now contaminated by deadly POPs like DDT because they were used in other parts of the world, and once in the atmosphere they ride the air currents and end up in the our polar bears, seals and Eskimo mother's breast milk.

And that most destructive fault is our obsession with ...

EFFICIENCY!

We gotta always take the soft option, cut corners, reduce costs, reduce overheads, in our quest to achieve our quarterly and annual goals, in fact all our goals and dreams.

How many high profile entrepreneurs have built their massive empires at the expense of the environment and the people they employ?

Because EFFICIENCY compels us to take the soft options, cutting costs etc. It is the far riskier path. CEO's rush products through so that they can impress the markets to drive their stock price higher, at the expense of the potential dangerous social and environmental impact.

The chemical, automotive and tobacco industries are a few examples. They make a few billion dollars in profit, but the legal and compensation costs end up destroying any advantage they may have gained for taking the soft option.

Another example is our poor farming habits which have destroyed our land, and now the future looks bleak because our rivers and land are in such poor conditions there is little chance they will recover to provide food for future generations.

And 6 billion plus mouths to feed each day is a big ask.

THE HARD RIGHT PATH

While EFFECTIVENESS means taking the hard but right path and many times slower path to lay the most powerful foundations that will guarantee ultimate enduring success.

Taking the time and meticulous attention to detail to make sure that products are safe for the market place.

As a result there are fewer opportunities for things to go wrong, or setbacks to happen. And our people and our environment are in great shape to enable us to sustain our growth.

That's why governments rely on gambling.

That's why we become gamblers.

And most tragic of all, it is why our governments always choose the soft, easy, expedient paths when it comes to solving our social and environmental problems.

Instead of introducing the most powerful tax system ever developed, they take the easy tax options. And therefore the nation's future prosperity is at great risk because the world is getting older faster, and there will not be enough tax funds to look after we old people.

The same for health. Governments allow the junk food industries to thrive with impunity, even though they are making the citizens of every nation unhealthy, which can only mean massive health bills tomorrow.

The same for the environment. Governments allow our natural resources to be destroyed. Our beautiful rainforests are all but gone forever. We all know that our wood based products and our new homes are built with timber obtained from the illegal timber trade, but we just don't care.
