At the beginning of his inspirational journey, Terry Fox was an unknown, yet outstanding Canadian athlete. He was on the verge of turning into a professional athlete when he became concerned about the problems with his right leg.

The results of his medical examinations weren’t good. The doctors found that Terry’s leg was riddled with cancer. But that was the good news. They also added that to save his life he had to have his leg amputated that very day.

To save his life, Terry chose to sacrifice his right leg that very day. The advise from his mentor and high school coach; "Terry Fox, you can do anything if you want to do it with your whole heart" was the driving force that helped Terry through this most difficult time.

It gave Terry the will to stop feeling sorry for himself and to get out of bed, and get out of his wheel chair, get an artificial leg, and start to regain his independence and dignity, and to slowly rebuild his shattered life.

Even the very wise and loving in our lives can totally underestimate our limitless powers to give. You must not make this same mistake today by undervaluing your limitless powers to give a very special gift to your world.

But remember, we don't want people to tell us to take care, we want people who love us enough to encourage us to be super bold.

Terry then decided that he was going to run across Canada to raise $100,000 for cancer research so that others would not have to endure what he had just been through. He wanted to call his bold run the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope.

But his parents where typical rational parents and they told Terry that his idea was very noble, but he should forget about all his silliness and go back to school, graduate and be a real contributor to society.

THE ULTIMATE ROLE OF OUR PARENTS?

Maybe that is the ultimate role of our parents -

To challenge us to defy them to prove to them that they were totally wrong about our true potential, and by totally focusing on proving our parents wrong about us, we forget about our fears, self-doubt and self-pity and we triumph and become our very best?

So when our parents call us useless, they probably mean - stop feeling sorry for yourself and get off your butt, get out there and take on the world and be your very best!

Just like the song by Johnny Cash - My Name Is Sue. The story of a father who knew he had nothing to give to his son, so he named his son Sue, so that he would have a tough childhood filled with ridicule to toughen his character and prepare him for the tough times ahead in his life. A wonderful act of love from a father.

Terry also visited the local Cancer Society to tell them of his goal, but they too did their best to discourage him. Yes son we totally empathize with what you are telling us, and we believe it is a very courageous idea, but we have other priorities, come back and see us another time.

But despite his parents' and the Cancer Society’s negative wisdom, Terry was determined to finish what he started. He convinced his college buddy (his master-mind group) to quit school to help him with his dream.

They both flew to the east coast where Terry threw his walking stick into the Atlantic Ocean and began his daunting mission to run across his country - Canada.

Terry made front page news as he struggled across Canada. And despite the great pain, and discomfort as the blood and sweat ran down his artificial leg, Terry just kept on going after his goal because nothing and nobody was going to stop him from following his bliss to give his special gift to his country and world.

Terry even met the Prime Minister of Canada who had to apologize to Terry for not knowing who he was, "You’ll have to forgive me son, but who are you?"

Terry replied; "I’m Terry Fox, and I’m doing the Marathon of Hope. My goal was to raise $100,000 for cancer research, we achieved that goal just yesterday. But with your help, I’d like to shoot for the million dollar mark."

That’s when Terry started to get noticed on TV across North America. Ordinary people photographed him and helped him to achieve his goal.

Running a marathon of twenty six miles was a challenge for a professional athlete every couple of months, but despite the growing pain and his increasing bad health, Terry kept on going at a hectic pace of thirty one miles a day, a distance of more than an Olympic Marathon each day.

By the time Terry reached Thunder Bay in Ontario, about the halfway mark of his journey, his respiratory system began to give him problems. When he got to the next town the doctors warned Terry that he must stop immediately.

The doctor said - Terry you are a national hero. You have united Canada by showing us that despite the language barriers and our divisive provincial differences, we should all be proud to be Canadians. We should place you on a pedestal.

But Terry shot back; Doc, do you know who I am? When I wanted to do this run my parents told me to wake up to myself and accept my fate.

Even the people I wanted to help, the Cancer Society, told me to go and take a jump, a pretty hard thing (to jump) to do with only one leg. Local governments told me to get off their highways and stop disrupting traffic. My goal was to raise $100,000. I did that. Then it was a million dollars, I did that a few days ago. Doc, when I step outside your office today, I’m going for $24.1 million.

Despite his great courage, he had finally lost his fight. There was no more time left for Terry to finish his dream. The cancer had spread through his upper body, and at best he had only eight hours left to live.

They told him they had an air-force jet ready to fly him home to his parents where he could die in peace.

A young journalist eager for a hot story shoved a microphone and camera in Terry’s face and asked; What’s your next move dude? He asked. The true professional athlete that Terry was, he replied several times;

But by Christmas of that year, many millions of inspired Canadians had gotten off their butts and raised the $24.1 million and completed Terry Fox’s vision to raise a dollar from every Canadian.

Many of us convince ourselves each day that we are insignificant little people, incapable of moving great mountains to achieve our grand dreams, and so we give up before we start.

So be bold with your life and keep asking for help, and mighty forces will come to your rescue and help you to achieve your dreams for you and your family, and you too will make your world a more loving powerhouse by default. As the great Susan Jeffers teaches us -

You only have one precious life to give to yourself, why not make it your very best, and inspire the world at the same time.
